The University of Virginia fourth-year Aircraft Design Capstone teams brought home both first and third place in the 2017-2018NASA Aeronautics University Design Challenge. The challenge, presented by NASA's Langley Research Center, invites teams of aerospace engineering undergraduate students to design ultra-efficient commercial aircraft that drastically reduce energy consumption compared to today's vehicles. The NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate's (ARMD) goal is to reduce aircraft energy consumption by 60 percent by 2045, and by 80 percent in the far-term. The top five teams presented their designs at the ARMD University Design Challenge Symposium held at NASA HQ in Washington, DC. Professor James McDaniel's Aircraft Design Class ranked exceptionally well at envisioning green aircraft. One UVA team tied for first place with its design Cete Volantem, a blended wing-body airframe, and the second UVA team tied for third place with its electric motor-based design The Catfish. This is Professor McDaniel's sixth national championship.
