Research @ UVA Engineering
Engineering for the Cyber FutureOur researchers are not merely reacting to the cyber age, we are catalyzing it. Machine learning, cybersecurity, high performance computing, intelligent memory systems, avalanche photodiodes, ultra-low-power chips: These are just some of the technologies essential to such next-generation projects as the Internet of Things and 100 Gbps Ethernet, and they are just some of the areas in which UVA Engineering holds world-class expertise.
Diana Franco Duran

Diana Franco Duran is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She is the director of the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program, and manages the Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) concentration.
Tomonari Furukawa

Xinfeng Gao's research is focused on the development of high-performance computing (HPC) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) algorithms for a wide range of applications in aerospace and mechanical engineering, involving shock waves, turbulence, combustion, plasma, and multifluids.
Gavin Garner

Gavin Garner joined the University of Virginia faculty in 2009. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Colby College and Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia in both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Gregory J. Gerling

My research interests span the fields of haptics, computational neuroscience, biomechanics, human–machine interaction, UX/UI, and human factors and ergonomics. We investigate cutaneous and proprioceptive cues that convey an object’s softness, and neural and biomechanical bases of social and emotional touch, and soft tissue manipulation or massage.
Avik Ghosh

Avik Ghosh is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia. He has over 100 refereed papers and book chapters and 2 upcoming books in the areas of computational nano-electronics and low power devices.
Jose Pantaleon Gomez III

Jose Gomez was recently the Director of Research for the Virginia Transportation Research Council, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s research division until he retired in 2016. Highlights from his career include co-Principal Investigator on 16 external grants totaling over $5.4 million in research and co-author of 42 research reports.
Jonathan L. Goodall

Jon Goodall is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the UVA Engineering Link Lab. He is a water resources engineer working to advance the field of hydroinformatics where data and computational sciences are used to improve the understanding, forecasting, and management of water systems.
Daniel G. Graham
Andrew Grimshaw

Andrew Grimshaw is the chief designer and architect of Mentat and Legion. In 1999 he co-founded Avaki Corporation, and served as its Chairman and Chief Technical Officer, until 2005 when Avaki was acquired by Sybase. In 2003 he won the Frost and Sullivan Technology Innovation Award.
Devin K. Harris

Professor Harris is chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia. His research and teaching interests focus on large scale infrastructure systems with a primary focus on condition monitoring and system performance.
Thomas R. Hartka

Dr. Hartka is currently board certified in Emergency Medicine and works clinically in the Emergency Department. He is also involved in medical student education, resident education, biomechanical instrumentation, and motor vehicle collision analysis.
UVA Engineering is a vibrant, collegial environment in which to work and teach.
