Information on Computers for Incoming First-Year Students

Engineering Laptop Requirements and Apple Brand
IMPORTANT NOTE ON APPLE LAPTOPS FOR THE ENGINEERING SCHOOL
Software needs for engineering students differ by major. Windows options typically ensure broadest compatibility across all disciplines, newer Apple silicon MacOS devices offer sufficient compatibility in many majors. The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and, Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) undergraduate programs rely on Windows-only software, therefore Windows based laptops are highly recommended.
Laptop Requirements for UVA Engineering Students
At UVA Engineering, students are expected to have their own laptops to support their coursework, projects, and theses. Here is what you need to know:
Choosing the Right Laptop
Your laptop should be lightweight, have a strong battery life, reasonable CPU power, and quality graphics. If you already own a laptop that is less than three years old, it is perfectly fine to start with that. We also recommend choosing a laptop with an excellent hardware repair plan for quick turnaround times and ensuring regular data backups to keep your work secure.

Operating Systems
The choice between Windows and MacOS depends on your major:
- Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE): Windows is highly recommended due to software compatibility.
- Other Majors: Both MacOS and Windows are acceptable for first-year students. You can use your existing laptop and plan to purchase a new one after deciding on your major.
Software
All engineering students receive a copy of Microsoft Office 365 through the MICROSOFT OFFICE AND WINDOWS FOR UVA STUDENTS PROGRAM. Additional software recommendations are available to ensure you have everything you need.
Financial Assistance
Student Financial Services offers a laptop program for those who qualify. If you need financial assistance, you can contact them directly at LAPTOP@VIRGINIA.EDU. There is also a hardship application available for unexpected financial needs.
