We are looking forward to meeting you at one of our summer orientation sessions! Here are some important details about summer advising and enrollment.
Preparing for Summer Advising & Enrollment
Please complete the following tasks well in advance of attending:
- In the orientation checklist, you should have signed up for the Math Placement test. The test covers pre-Calculus, Calculus I, and Calculus II. Questions? Email APMA-Placement@virginia.edu.
- Watch the selected film of the SEAS Engineering Character Strength Initiative (ECSI) Common Movie Experience, “October Sky” (1999), available through the UVA Library. As you watch the movie, pick one character, identify their personal strengths, and where they had to act upon them. These will be discussed on the first day of your Engineering Foundations 1010 course.
- Learn about the Engineering courses required of first-year students
Have AP, IB, or dual-enrollment credits?
- Request your AP and/or IB scores to be sent to UVA. You may need to make a second request later this summer if you have pending scores. You should have your score report available for reference during orientation.
- Review our accepted AP and IB scores
- Request your official dual enrollment/college transcripts:
If the institution uses Parchment to send transcripts, please have the official transcript sent to the University of Virginia School of Engineering & Applied Sci ence. Otherwise, official electronic transcripts can be sent from the college or university to JR7UP@VIRGINIA.EDU. Official transcripts can also be mailed to the address below:

Finding courses using Stellic
- As an incoming first-year student in the School of Engineering, you will be using our advising support platform, Stellic, to help you search for courses, explore programs of interest, and communicate with your advisors. Please watch this short tutorial video on how to search for courses in Stellic in preparation for your summer orientation session. If you have questions or need support, visit the Stellic for Students website or email stellicsupport@virginia.edu.
- We will pre-enroll you in several of the required first-year courses (see below under “Scheduling”). Please use Stellic to identify 2-3 course options to satisfy a Humanities or Social Science (HSS) Elective or other first-year required course that fits your pre-enrolled course schedule. You will sign up for those on the day of your advising and enrollment!
What to Expect during Summer Advising and Enrollment
Advising: You will meet with an Advisor and Orientation Leaders to discuss your selection of courses for the fall. They will advise you on course selection and important dates, and academic success strategies, and other important information. We will also introduce you to people and activities that will enhance your college experience and guide you toward success.
Scheduling: We already enrolled you in the required fall courses. These courses include ENGER 1010 (or ENGR 1410 for Rodman Scholars), CHEM 1410, and 1411. You will also be enrolled in a Calculus placeholder course (APMA 1001). This Calculus placeholder course will hold your spot on your fall schedule for a section of Calculus I, II, or III until we finalize your Calculus placement results. Based on the Calculus placement results, you will be enrolled in a section of APMA 1090, APMA 1110, or APMA 2120 before Open Enrollment on August 5. Students who do not complete the Calculus Placement exam will not be auto-enrolled in a section of Calculus for fall.
- Exceptions: If we have received AP, IB, or transfer credit for any of these classes before automatic enrollment, then we will not enroll you in a class for which you already have credit (ex. You got a 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry exam, you will not be enrolled in CHEM 1410)
- We will not make any changes to the classes you were automatically placed into during your advising and registration session. Students wanting to make changes to these courses will be able to once Open Enrollment begins on August 4th.
After your advising session, you will have an assigned registration time during which you will enroll in the remaining courses you selected for your fall schedule. We will be sending out an email with your advising and registration session dates and times in the coming weeks. Please be sure to keep checking your UVA email for important communications.
